Writing Prompts: Interesting Characters

As a customer service agent, I meet a lot of interesting people. People who must sense that I am a storyteller because for some odd reason, everyone who meets me seems compelled to tell me their story. Though somewhat inconvenient at times, it is through this sharing that I find my most unique characters and plot lines.

So this week, we are going to salute those strange and odd people in the world who like to overshare and do a whole weeks worth of writing prompts involving interesting characters.

Writing Prompts: Like a Child

Thinking of writing prompts about children is hard. Children and childhood is such an emotionally charged subject that I find it difficult to just throw them in the pool with no floaties on, so to speak. So today we are going to deviate a little and write about adults who act like children. I worked for over seventeen years in various customer service positions so this, by far, is the easiest set of writing prompts I have ever written.

Writing Prompts: Troubled Teens

Remember yesterday when I said that children had their moments when they are not so good? Well those moment increase in frequency as the child ages into their teens. This is the time when they are struggling with hormones, peer pressure and parental authority. So today we are going to try and help our troubled teens cope with the challenges of life.

Writing Prompts: Good Samaritans

Although children do have their moments, for the most part they are good kids. Today we are going to write about children who help out their families, friends and communities

Writing Prompts: Children’s Day

When I sat down to update the editorial schedule for the writing prompts, I decided that this week we would focus on children because I thought that Children’s Day was celebrated this week. Turns out I was mistaken and Children’s Day was actually celebrated in early June. But since we are on the subject anyway, I figured why not give the kiddies a week of writing prompts dedicated to them as a belated Children’s day present.

Writing Prompts: In the End

All good things must come to an end and super heroics and super villainy is no exception. Chances are your super character will become disenchanted with their chosen work, get killed, become imprisoned or, unless your character is immortal, they will age out of their roles.

Writing Prompts: Super Relationships

Relationships are hard and I imagine they are doubly so when you are a superhero or supervillian. There’s all that subterfuge and secrecy when it comes to keeping the secret identity secret. Not to metion that the superpowers themselves can put a crimp in one’s love life. And for a super villain, seeking world domination requires a lot of time and dedication that leaves very little room for a significant other.

So your task today is to help your super heroes and villains establish a good work/life balance to help them maintain their relationships.

Writing Prompts: Superbad

Heroes exist because villains do. Without one, there would be no need for the other. Today we are going to work on developing villainous characters that require a hero to step up and put them in their place.

Writing Prompts: In the Beginning

The new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, released over the weekend and everybody is raving over the late Heath Ledgers performance as the Joker. There is even talk of an Oscar nod for Ledger because of his unique portrayal of one of Batman’s nefarious foes.

Superheros and Supervillains do not just spring out of no where. They have a past that often begins with them being ordinary people until something extraordinary happens to them. I like this new series of Batman movies because we get to see that process unfold in the life of Bruce Wayne. This week’s theme for the writing prompts will center around Heroes and Villains and today we are going to explore some possible situations in which these heroes and villains are born.

Best of Craigslist-Part XV: Relationship Edition

The best thing about Craigslist is that it offers us a glimpse, however brief, at humankind’s relationship with each other. Sometimes the scene is sad and sometimes its scary. Most of the time however it’s just plain funny. Here are a few gems to make you feel that much better about the people in your life.
